1. Camera scanning (negatives), spectral lighting testing, Dynamic range tests
  2. Art Reproduction

Art reproduction (cheap method)

I set this up in our spare storage room. I pried loose enough room to set everything up.
Lights are Cree daylight LEDs from Home Depot (about $10 ea.) Clamp fixtures are also from Home Depot. Light stands are mike stands.
Camera is a Canon T2i (18 megapixels)
Laptop is an approx. $300 Lenovo netbook. Tethering software is free Canon EOS Utility (that comes with the camera.)
Photos (except for final art rendition) are from a handheld Google Pixel 2 using ambient room light.
Painting is by my Grandmother. The family all like it.
Press the right triangle thingy to see full screen slideshow. (Can see captions better.)

  • Cross polarization to reduce reflections. Polarizing film suspended in front of lights. Circular polarizer on camera lens. Lights at an angle to the art so brush strokes will show up.

  • I shoot in portrait orientation to minimize light falloff on the art (because the lights are on the side.) Geared tripod head helps a lot to adjust the camera so it is square with the art.
  • Art behind glass to keep it flat. Camera tethered via USB to laptop that is running Canon EOS Utility to control the camera from the laptop. This makes Live View a lot easier to control. Art behind glass needs manual focus. Manual focus at 10x on a laptop screen is easier than manual focus on the camera LCD.
  • Adjustable art holder. Can slide back and forth on the table to adjust distance from camera. Can raise the art, if needed. All illumination is from Home Depot Cree daylight LEDs. Note accurate color rendition.
  • The captured image. I printed several copies of this for Mother's day. My family loved the reproduction (the original has been on display for several months.)
  • Detail that shows the texture of the canvas (actually, canvas-like thin cardboard.)
