Camera scan compared to Plustek 7600i
This shows the effect of diffused light with an image that was "camera scanned" with a Canon 60D (using diffused light) compared to the same image scanned with a Plustek 7600i (that apparently doesn't use diffused light) using VueScan. Both images are from a frame of Kodak Gold 100 negative and were scanned in the same session. The 7600i scan was done first and I then did the 60D "scan." I did color correction in Photoshop but did not clone out any dings or scratches in either image.
The first two images are at 3600x2400 resolution. To see them at full resolution, right click on the first image and choose "Original". The 2nd and 3rd are 100% crops from approx. the center of each image. In particular, notice how diffused light used when camera scanning affects how the scratches look between images three and four.
I color corrected both images in Photoshop. The colors don't match because they are two different processes.
The light for the camera scanned image came from four CFLs (Compact Florescent Lamps) in a softbox with two additional layers of Rosco #3206 diffusion filters in between the softbox and the film. The light for the 7600i is its internal light which cannot be adjusted. I resized each image to 3600x2400 (about eight megapixels) so that 100% crops would match up.
